The State will open four one stop crisis centres for women. An initiative of the Union Ministry of Women and Child Development, it will provide police support, shelter, legal and medical services as well as counseling to victims of violence under one roof.
It will also operate a 24 hour helpline which women can contact in crisis situations. The centres will be opened in Kancheepuram, Tirunelveli, Salem, and Madurai districts. A centre is already functioning in Tambaram.It is managed by five members including a counselor and a helper. A fund of Rs 8 lakhs has been allocated for the construction of each centre. In the past one year, the center has handled 48 cases related to domestic violence, dowry demands and ill treatment by husbands and in- laws.
