It is understood that over 227 women’s hostels across Chennai are operating even without filing applications for registration. The Chennai collector Shanmuga Sundaram said that necessary action will be taken against the hostels as ample time had already been given to them. After the time limit is over, a show cause notice would be sent to all the 227 hostels out of which 79 are in the IT hub of Shollinganallur, 20 in Velachery, 23 in Guindy and 18 in Mylapore area.
Special enquiry teams have been formed. Strict action will be taken like disconnection of electricity and water supply after enquiry. When quizzed about the women in the hostels which are under scanner, the Collector said that time would be given to them and they will not be shut immediately and that due procedures would be followed in all the instances.
