The Tamil Nadu government ordered the permanent closure of the Sterlite plant in Thoothukudi on the grounds of pollution of air and water. The government order was issued by the Principal Secretary of the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board to seal and close the unit permanently in the larger public interest.
The Thoothukudi Tahsildar along with the district police sealed the factory.This moment was treasured by the locals as they had been waiting for this moment for the past 23 years.
