Indian Railways has introduced new rules regarding allotment of lower berths in trains. A certain number of lower berths in all compartments are reserved for women, senior citizens and people with disabilities.
This decision was taken by the Indian Railways due to the stress and discomfort caused to the elderly and women passengers when they are allotted middle or upper berths. These new rules will enhance passenger experience.
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav discussed this project of the Railways in the Lok Sabha recently. To implement this policy, the Railways plans to launch an automatic allocation system. Pregnant women, women above 45 years of age, men over the age of 60 years will be automatically allotted lower berths while booking tickets. The allotment will be done based on the availability of the lower berths. There will be a special quota reserved for people with disabilities in all trains so that they can have a safe and comfortable journey.
