Retired Indian cricketer Ravichandran Ashwin was conferred the Padma Shri award on Monday. The 38 year old spin bowler received the prestigious award from President Draupadi Murmu at her residence.
Ashwin was honoured with the award for his remarkable achievements in the game of cricket and for his illustrious career with Team India.His family was present at the Rashtrapati Bhavan as he received the award.
Ashwin retired from the game and was the second highest wicket taker for India in Test cricket with 537 wickets in 106 games. The leading wicket taker for India was Anil Kumble who holds the record with 619 wickets.
Ashwin also played 116 One Day International matches for India and claimed 156 wickets in this format of the game. He played 65 T20 matches and took 72 wickets.He is part of team Chennai Super Kings and continues to play in the Indian Premier League.
