Former US police officer sentenced to more than 20 years for murder of George Floyd

Derek Chauvin, a former Minneapolis police officer who was convicted in the murder of George Floyd was sentenced to more than 20 years in prison. He pleaded guilty for violating the civil rights of Floyd, a black man. It may be recalled that Chauvin put his knees on Floyd’s neck for nearly 10 minutes till he died. The incident sparked outrage in the US.


Chauvin. 46, is already in prison and is serving a 22 and a half year sentence. He will serve his term in a Minnesota state penitentiary where he has been held in solitary confinement.
The federal prosecutors sought a sentence of 25 years. Though Chauvin spoke before his sentence, he did not apologize for his actions.

Raj Babbar gets 2 year jail term in 1996 assault case

A court in Uttar Pradesh has awarded a two year jail term for actor-politician Raj Babbar in a case involving the assault of a polling officer in 1996. It also imposed a fine of Rs 8,500 on the actor-politician.


The FIR in the case was lodged in Wazirganj police station on May 2, 1996 by the polling officer During that period of time, Raj Babbar was in the Samajwadi Party and was contesting the elections from Lucknow. A verbal dispute arose between him and the polling officer which led to the assault. Though Raj Babbar was found guilty of assaulting a government officer, he was given bail. A police complaint was filed under various sections of the IPC and a chargesheet was filed into court. He was convicted for voluntarily causing hurt to deter a public servant from performing his duty and three other offences. Raj Babbar was present in court when the verdict was pronounced.

“Earth Stories is all about those little instances occurring on Earth and its inhabitants that have lingered in my mind.”  – Shalu Juneja

Juneja’s works are concerned with themes of womanhood, motherhood and the continuous changes that we experience as humans over time. She draws imageries from her past and present experiences, relationships and her deep connection with nature.

Earth Stories is an abstract expressionistic series; Juneja’s gestural brush strokes, textured multi layered canvas, rich with mark making process, carries all the gritty complexities of nature and humanity – the two driving forces behind the works.

By mixing diverse mediums, she tries to reflect scorched earth, the gritty textures of erosions and rust, the fibres of decay, the murky waters… all rendered in earth tones and deep indigo. Her varied techniques- spontaneous mark making, burning, tearing, bleaching echo the ravages brought upon by humankind on this earth.

Speaking about this series, Juneja says,“Sometimes I find patterns in nature through sources that are as micro as the bacteria formation to the macro satellite imagery of Earth; And lately, these patterns have also led me to address grave issues such as climate change, war and natural disasters”

President nominates PT Usha, Ilayaraja and 2 others to Rajya Sabha

The President has nominated athlete PT Usha, music composer Ilayaraja, philanthropist Veerandra Heggade and screenwriter director V.Vijayendra Prasad to the Rajya Sabha. All the four are from the south. PT Usha is from Kerala, Ilayaraja from Chennai, Heggade from the Dharmasthala temple in Karnataka and Vijayendra Prasad from Andhra Pradesh.


Prime Minister Narendra Modi has congratulated all the four nominees on Twitter. They are instances of the government recognising outstanding Indians who have made a mark in diverse fields.
The Rajya Sabha has 245 seats out of which 233 are elected and 12 are appointed by the President of India. These 12 people have to be those who have significantly contributed to the fields of social science, literature, art or social work.

Candle light march in Kolkata on Fr. Stan Swamy’s 1st death anniversary

Fr Stan Swamy was a tribal rights activist who was arrested in 2020 on terror charges. He was arrested by the National Investigation Agency in connection with the Elgar Parishad Maoist links case.


Around 200 people had taken out a candle march in Kolkata to observe his first death anniversary. Members of various civil society groups like Kolkata Nagarik Sammelan and Paschimbongo Samajik Nyay Manch assembled at the Park Circus Maidan area. They held candles and placards saying ”Stan Swamy, we won’t forget your fight.”
Fr Stan, an octogenarian activist had been suffering from multiple ailments including Parkinson’s disease. He breathed his last in a hospital in Mumbai on July 5,2021.

Father -daughter fly fighter jets together

Air Commodore Sanjay Sharma and his daughter Flying Officer Ananya Sharma created history by becoming the Indian Air Force’s first father-daughter duo to fly fighter jets together.


Ananya completed her B Tech in Electronics and Communication. She was commissioned as a fighter pilot in December 2021. Her father Air Commodore Sanjay Sharma joined the IAF in 1989. He acquired vast experience of fighter operations as he commanded a Mig-21 Sqn and also a frontline fighter station.
The duo created history on May 30, 2022, when they flew in the same formation of Hawk-132 aircraft at the Air Force Station at Bidar where Ananya is currently undergoing training.

Nepo will challenge Carlsen for the second time

Ian Nepomniachtchi from Russia will be challenging the current world chess champion Magnus Carlsen for the second time. He won the Candidates Tournament held in Madrid and was undefeated. He gained 9 points with 5 wins and eight draws.


Nepo won the tournament with a round to spare and he finished beyond the reach of close contenders Hikaru Nakamura and Ding Liren. This is his second consecutive victory in the Candidates Tournament. Ding Liren came second and Nakamura took the third place
Nepo was beaten by Magnus Carlsen in the World Championship match held in December last year. The scores were 7.5-3.5. Nepo has qualified for the 2023 World Championship against Magnus Carlsen but if the world champion decides to forfeit his title, Nepo will play against Ding Liren.

Ethiopian Airlines introduced a Non-Stop Flight between CHENNAI and ADDIS ABABA

Ethiopian Airlines First Ever Non-Stop Flight between CHENNAI and ADDIS ABABA launched  by Mr. Lemma Yadecha- CCO, Ethiopian Airlines

Ethiopian Airlines, Africa’s leading airline, has started thrice weekly operations to/from Chennai, India as of 02 July 2022. Chennai has joined the vast Ethiopian network as a fourth destination in India after New Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru. Ethiopian started its service to India with a debut flight to New Delhi in 1966, just 20 years after the airline was founded. Ethiopian pioneered the air transport linkage between Africa and India.  Recently, Ethiopian marked its 50th year anniversary of uninterrupted service to Mumbai, the commercial capital of India.

The flights to Chennai will be operated using B737-8 aircraft as per the below schedule.

Ola driver kills techie in Chennai

An Ola driver in Chennai has been arrested for allegedly killing a passenger due to delay in furnishing the OTP before he could board the cab. The driver is said to have punched the man several times after an altercation broke out between the two.

The passenger has been identified as Umendra who was employed with a software company in Coimbatore. He had come with his family for the weekend and was visiting a relative. They had booked a cab. When the cab arrived, there was some confusion about the OTP. The cab driver asked Upendra and his family to get out of the vehicle and first confirm the OTP. While getting down, Upendra is said to have slammed the door of the cab and it led to a heated argument. The driver then punched Upendra who collapsed and was taken to a nearby hospital where he was declared dead on arrival. The cab driver has been arrested and investigations are going on.

MS Dhoni and Sakshi celebrate 12 years of togetherness

Former India cricket captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni and wife Sakshi celebrated their 12 th wedding anniversary on July 4th. The couple got married on July 4, 2010 in Dehradun. They were blessed with a babygirl- Ziva who was born on February 6, 2015.

Sakshi met Dhoni at Taj Bengal in Kolkata where the Indian team was staying. She was a hotel management student during that time. When her manager introduced her to Dhoni, he fell in love with her instantly. The movie titled MS Dhoni- The Untold Story captured the life story of Dhoni. Sakshi was often present during the Chennai Super Kings matches along with daughter Ziva. Dhoni announced his retirement from international cricket in 2020. However, he continued playing for the Indian Premier League and was part of Chennai Super Kings team. He relinquished captaincy and handed the baton to Ravindra Jadeja this season of IPL but halfway through this year’s IPL, Jadeja handed back captaincy to Dhoni who confirmed that he will play for the franchise in IPL 2023 as well.

Sini Shetty from Karnataka wins Miss India 2022

Sini Shetty, a 21 year old woman from Karnataka was crowned Miss India 2022. The event was held at the Jio Convention Centre in Mumbai on Sunday the 3rd July. Miss India 2020, Manasa Varanasi from Telangana crowned the winner Sini Shetty.
Sini is studying to become a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) and will represent India at the prestigious 71st Miss World pageant. The runners up for the event were Rubal Shekhawat from Rajasthan and Shinata Chauhan from Uttar Pradesh.

Pet dog helps family to catch thief

A pet dog helped a family to catch a thief in their house in Kalighat area of South Kolkata and also to recover the stolen goods from him. Police sources said that this incident took place at Jadu Bhattacharya Lane that is just a stone’s throw away from the residence of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.


The thief broke open the latch of the main door at around 4. In the morning, and after stealing a few items, ate some food from the refrigerator. The woman of the house woke up on hearing sounds and raised an alarm. On hearing her screams, their pet dog Rocky pounced on the thief, bit his leg and latched on to him till the family members overpowered him. The police were informed. They rushed to the spot and arrested the thief who is said to be a vegetable vendor in the area. A case has been registered and investigation is going on.

MS Dhoni gets knee treated for Rs 40

Former India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni spent only Rs 40 to get his knee treated in a hermitage in Ranchi. Dhoni visited the hermitage after he saw the positive results of his parents’ treatment who were taking treatment for the past 3 months.


The ayurvedic doctor named Vandan Singh Khervar lives in the densely forested area of Lapung which is about 70 kms from Ranchi. Dhoni has been battling knee pain for many months, visited the doctor who charged Rs 20 for consultation and prescribed medicine worth Rs 20. It has been a month since Dhoni has been consulting this doctor and has been visiting every 4 days.
In fact the doctor did not even recognise Dhoni when he consulted him. Dhoni’s presence made many people in the region flock just to catch a glimpse of him. Dhoni usually sits in his car, takes his medicines and later obliges his fans with selfies.
