Annual Tree Lighting Ceremony at Novotel, Chamiers Road

Novotel,Chamiers Road kickstarted the festive cheer with a Christmas tree lighting ceremony on the 12th of December in the presence of Oleg N Avdeev, Consul General of the Russian Federation in Chennai and Nitirooge Phoneprasert, Consul General of Royal Thai Consulate – General, Chennai.

The evening was celebrated with some carols and a specially curated menu for the guests that included cocktails and delicious food ranging from classic mulled wine, cranberry mimosa, quesadillas, Shashliks and lots more, prepared by their team of mixologists and master chefs.

US President Joe Biden to sign bill granting protection to same sex marriage

US President Joe Biden will sign a bill today that will grant protection to same sex marriage. Thousands of people are gathering at the White House to celebrate this legislative milestone.
There will be a gathering of a group of Republican and Democratic lawmakers on the White House grounds along with advocates for the celebration according to spokesperson Karine Jean Pierre. She stated that this legislation will give the LGBTQ+ community peace of mind and will also guarantee them protection.


The US Supreme Court in 2015 legalized the union of same sex couples and since then thousands of them got married. The general public have also supported these unions.
The new legislation called the Respect for Marriage Act does not require states to legalize same sex marriages but requires them to recognize such marriages as long as it was valid in the state where it was performed.

Aishwarya Rajinikanth shares birthday pictures of her dad on Twitter

Superstar Rajinikanth celebrated his 72nd birthday yesterday, the 12th of December. His elder daughter Aishwarya took to Twitter to share an unseen picture of her dad with her sons.


Aishwarya’s elder son can be seen hugging his grandfather from behind, while her younger son is seen sitting on the floor with his hand around his grandfather’s knee. The picture was captioned ”Cannot capture something more beautiful. Cannot capture some such bonds. My birthday boy with my boys.”
On the work front, Rajinikanth is awaiting the release of his film Jailer, where he plays the role of a jailer. The film has been predominantly shot inside a prison. The film is directed by Nelson and has Tamannah Bhatia, Vinayakan and Ramya Krishnan in key roles.

Justice Dipankar Datta takes oath as Supreme Court judge

Justice Dipankar Datta, who was formerly the Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court took oath as a judge of the Supreme Court. He was administered the oath of office by Chief Justice of India, DY Chandrachud at a brief ceremony in court hall number 1 of the Supreme Court.


The swearing-in ceremony was live-streamed and was attended by Supreme Court judges and lawyers. The strength of the apex court has now gone upto 28 against the sanctioned strength of 34.
Justice Dipankar Datta is the son of former Calcutta High Court Judge Salil Kumar Datta and will have more than seven years tenure in the apex court. He will retire on February 8, 2030. He was born on February 9, 1965 and obtained his law degree from the University of Calcutta in 1989. He practised in the Supreme Court and High Courts. He was appointed a permanent judge of the Calcutta High Court in June 2006 and as the Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court in April 2020.

King Charles releases first Christmas card as King

Buckingham Palace released the photograph of King Charles for his first Christmas card as monarch. This picture that was chosen by Charles and his wife Camilla was taken on September 3rd, 2022, shortly before he became King. It was clicked by Samir Hussein at the Braemar Games held in Scotland


The card features both King Charles and Queen Consort Camilla and reads ”Wishing you a very Happy Christmas and New Year.” King Charles is seen in a neutral colour plaid suit-jacket while Camilla is seen sporting a green jacket with a red plaid inside the collar and a matching green hat with multi=coloured feathers.
Braemar Gathering is a celebration of traditional Scottish games, sports and dancing at Braemar, a village 60 miles west of Aberdeen, which is close to the King’s Balmoral summer residence.

Elton John quits Twitter

Veteran musician Elton John has decided to stop using Twitter and cited ”misinformation” as the reason. This is due to the recent change in policy of Twitter which will allow misinformation to flourish unchecked.


Twitter had announced a couple of weeks ago that it will no longer enforce a policy to combat misinformation about the Covid-19 pandemic. Elon Musk, the CEO of Twitter tweeted that he hopes that Elton John returns to the platform soon.
Some other prominent people who quit Twitter after Musk took over the platform are Whoopi Goldberg, Jim Carrey, Gigi Hadid, Toni Braxton, Jack White, Liz Phair, Shonda Rhimes, David Simon, Trent Reznor, Jamela Jamil and Stephen Fry.
Twitter is also in the centre of controversy due to antisemitic posts on the platform by Kanye West and Kyrie Irving.

Annual Tree Lighting Ceremony at Holiday Inn Chennai

Wearing their Christmas hats & safety face masks, folks of Chennai welcomed the festive season by lighting up the Christmas tree at Holiday Inn Chennai OMR IT Expressway. They celebrated peace, good will and the holiday season at the hotel’s fun-filled annual event of ‘Tree Lighting Ceremony’. They saw Santa Claus making a very special visit, cheering up everyone with a bunch of chocolates & sweets.

The culinary brigade of the hotel also gave a sneak peek into the Christmas tasting menu with some unique small plates.

The joyful soiree was being hosted by serving the best of Christmas Special Wines & Shooters, followed by hors d’oeuvres by Executive Chef Asif Iqbal which was admired & appreciated by all the guests.

Sonia Gandhi celebrates her birthday today

Congress leader Sonia Gandhi is celebrating her birthday today and Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to Twitter to wish her and also prayed for her to have a long and happy life. Sonia flew to Ranthambore where the party’s Bharat Jodo Yatra is currently. Upon arrival, Sonia was welcomed by the administration and officials of the police department. She will stay in Sher Bagh Hotel and will celebrate her birthday there according to party leaders.


Her daughter Priyanka Gandhi reached Ranthambore by road to join her. Rahul has also joined his mother and the Bharat Jodo Yatra is on a break today. It is stated that the local administration has made all arrangements to ensure the safety of Sonia Gandhi and her family members.

First coins with King Charles released

The first coins featuring King Charles III, have entered circulation in the UK and millions of 50 pence coins have been released to post offices in Britain. They have been designed by British sculptor Martin Jennings and the coin has a portrait of King Charles III facing to the left, the opposite direction to the late Queen Elizabeth. It has a Latin inscription that translates ”Charles III, by the Grace of God, King, Defender of the Faith.”.


The reverse of the coin features a design created to commemorate the late Queen’s coronation at Westminster Abbey. This is an excellent opportunity for coin collectors to add to their coin collection. Rebecca Morgan, the Royal Mint director of collector services said that ”Today marks a new era for UK coinage, with the effigy of King Charles III appearing on 50ps in circulation.”

Richest man in the world briefly slips to second position

Elon Musk, CEO of Twitter and Tesla, who is the richest person in the world, briefly slipped to second position and was replaced by Bernard Arnault, the chief executive of luxury brand Louis Vuitton’s parent company LVMH.


Bernard Arnault took the top spot in the Forbes list with a net worth of $185.3 billion. Elon Musk has now regained his numero uno position with his personal wealth of $185.7 billion.
Musk has been holding the title of the world’s richest person since September 2021 when he overtook Amazon founder Jeff Bezos. Elon Musk is also the head of SpaceX and Neuralink, a startup that is developing ultra-high bandwidth brain-machine interfaces to connect the human brain to computers. However, Tesla, the electric car maker, comprises the bulk of his fortune.

Beautician booked for messing up bride’s make-up

A beautician from Jabalpur in Madhya Pradesh has been booked after her assistant allegedly spoiled the make-up of a bride.
The bride, a resident of Ghamapur area, had booked an appointment with the beautician who runs a parlour in Kotwali Bazaar for her marriage on December 3rd. According to the police, the beautician had taken an advance amount from the family of the bride, assuring that she would reach the venue on the day of the marriage. However, she did not keep up her words and when the family of the bride contacted her, she asked the bride to visit the parlour.


When the bride visited the beauty parlour, the beautician instead of doing the bridal make-up herself, assigned it to her assistant who messed up the work. The parlour owner also misbehaved and threatened the family of the bride. Hence the bride’s family registered a complaint at the Kotwali Police Station. A case has been registered against the beautician under sections 294 (obscene act) and section 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code.

Actress Priyanka Chopra Jonas, aeronautical engineer Sirisha Bandla, author Geetanjali Shree and Social worker Sneha Jawale are the four Indians on BBC’s list of influential women of the year.


This annual list celebrates the achievements of women internationally and is used to focus on women’s experiences around the world through a series of interviews, documentaries and features. This is the first time when the women from the previous list were asked to nominate women to the list of 2022.
Priyanka Chopra has been described as one of the biggest stars of Bollywood. She made her debut in 2002 and has acted in more than 60 films. She also acts in Hollywood movies and series. Priyanka is also a Unicef Goodwill Ambassador who campaigns for the rights of children and the education of girls.

Udhayanidhi Stalin to become a Minister in the TN Government

Udhayanidhi Stalin, the son of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin, will be sworn in as a Minister in the Cabinet next week. He is a DMK MLA from Chepauk-Thiruvallikeni Assembly constituency.


Udhayanidhi who is also the DMK youth wing secretary, will get the Rural Development and Special Programmes portfolio according to reports. He is referred to as ‘the rising son’ of the DMK and he is the third generation leader from the family. He was appointed as the secretary of the DMK youth wing in 2019, a post that his father Stalin held for nearly 3 decades.
Stalin became the President of the DMK in 2018 after his father M Karunanidhi passed away. He took on the mantle of chief minister after the DMK -led coalition won the assembly elections in 2021.
