Godfather of AI warns that it has potential to take over humanity

Geoffrey Hinton who is referred to the ”Godfather of Artificial Intelligence” has warned of the dangers of AI and has asked governments and companies to consider how they can safely advance this technology and ensure that it is ethically used.

Geoffrey Hinton was employed with Google and he retired earlier this year. He is a British computer scientist and a cognitive psychologist. According to him, in a span of about 5 years, AI may be able to reason better than humans.
He fears that AI has the potential to take over humanity and that mankind is moving into a period where things are more intelligent than humans and  understanding technology is just as complex as trying to understand a human mind.
AI can increase efficiency and productivity but many people can lose their jobs due to it and there may not be enough jobs to replace those that are lost.

Indian teenager launched AI company in 2022 and is now worth Rs 100 crore

Pranjali Awasthi, a 16 year old Indian teenager created history by launching her AI startup, DelvAI in 2022. She attributes her entrepreneurial journey’s inspiration to her father.

Awasthi was interested in technology from a very early age. Her father inspired her to learn coding at the tender age of just 7 years. When she was 11 years old, her family relocated to Florida and new opportunities unfolded. She had the opportunity to access computer science classes and competitive math programs. Her internship at the research labs at the Florida International University at the age of 13 set the stage for her venture.
Awasthi learned about machine learning projects as she attended virtual school due to the pandemic. The objective of her startup is to help researchers access specific information within the realm of online content. It is currently worth around Rs 100 crore.

Model walks the ramp in Chennai wearing live fish

A fashion show was held in Chennai and a model was seen walking the ramp with live fish. She wore a mermaid style dress with a pot structure attached to it. A video of this fashion show was shared by the Instagram page Make Over by Preethi where a person is seen transferring small fish and water into the pot and the model is shown walking with the fish inside the pot.

The video got more than eight million views and many likes too but some users were perturbed on seeing the video and commented that keeping so many fish in a small space is utter cruelty. Some even said that it was strange and utterly stupid.
This is not the first time that animals were used in fashion shows. Earlier in the Paris Fashion Week 2023, a model was seen with garden flowers and butterflies. Here too many people expressed their concern about brands promoting abuse and animal cruelty.

India bags 107 medals in Asian Games 2023

India finished fourth in the Asian Games 2023 held in Hangzhou with a record haul of 107 medals that included 28 gold, 38 silver and 41 bronze. They exceeded the medal count of 70 medals that they won in the Asian Games held in 2018.

Indian athletes lead the medals tally with 29 medals. They won 6 gold, 14 silver and 9 bronze medals in various events. The next big haul is 22 medals that they won in shooting.
The People’s Republic of China led the standings with a total haul of 382 medals including  200 gold, 111 silver and 71 bronze medals. Japan came second with186 medals that included 51 gold, 66 silver and 69 bronze medals.  Republic of Korea was third in the list with a total haul of190 medals that included 42 gold, 59 silver and 89 bronze medals.
President Droupadi Murmu congratulated the team and said the entire nation is proud of the Indian contingent for bringing home 107 medals.

Cricketer Shikhar Dhawan gets divorce on grounds of cruelty

The family court in Delhi granted divorce to cricketer Shikhar Dhawan and his wife on the ground of cruelty.

Their marriage was solemnised in December, 2012 according to Sikh rites at Gurudwara, Nelson Marg, Vasant Kunj, New Delhi. Both parties agreed for a divorce by mutual consent. The couple has been living separately since August 2020.
Shikhar Dhawan had also asked for granting a permanent custody of his minor son as it was morally, psychologically and mentally disastrous for his son to be with his mother as she acted detrimentally to his welfare since he was born.
However the custody issue is a complicated one as a custody petition for the child is also pending in a court in Australia. The minor boy is an Australian citizen and is studying in Australia
He stated that he discovered that the main reason for his wife to induce him into marrying her was to extort crores of rupees from him and that understood that only after the marriage was solemnised.

Alternate seating to be provided by Air India for solo women passengers

In order to allow women passengers to have a comfortable flight, Air India has come up with a plan to offer solo women passengers and mothers a choice of alternate seats on their flights. They would be preferably given a window seat or an aisle at their convenience.

A circular to this effect has been issued. The same privilege will also be extended to children travelling alone and seated in centre seats.
These measures are being taken to avoid any issues between male and female passengers after it was brought to their notice that women passengers travelling alone felt uncomfortable when they were assigned a middle seat.
According to an airline employee, every flight has at least 10 % solo women passengers and it may not be practical to follow this directive.
Aviation expert Mohan Ranganathan came up with a practical idea that the concerned department should handle the situation and allot window or aisle seats to solo women passengers at the time of booking itself.

Akshata Murthy gatecrashes husband Rishi Sunak’s event

Akshata Murthy literally gatecrashed her husband Rishi Sunak’s event and made her surprise maiden speech on Wednesday. She referred to Rishi as her ”best friend” and that they were one team.

She gave some insights about their relationship too. She disclosed that her husband was totally unaware of her gate crashing. She stated that she was present at the conference to show her support to Rishi and his party.
Rishi and Akshata were married for 14 years and met when they were just 24 when they were studying in America. Akshata further stated that she was struck by two things about Rishi. One was his love for his home-the United Kingdom and second was his desire to ensure that many people should get the opportunities in life that he was lucky to have.
She said that she and her two daughters were proud of how he was doing the right thing even though it was hard .

Statue of Amdedkar to be unveiled in US

A tall statue of Dr. B.R.Ambedkar, the main architect of the Indian Constitution will be unveiled in Maryland, US on October 14. This statue has been made by a renowned sculptor Ram Sutar.

The statue is 15 feet tall and is named ”Statue of Equality” .It forms part of the Ambedkar International Centre that is being constructed in Accokeek city of Maryland.
This memorial will spread the messages of the Ambedkarite movement . Many representatives of the Ambedkarite movement from all over the world are expected to attend the statue’s unveiling ceremony on the 14th of October.
It is said to be the largest statue of Ambedkar outside India. The statue was made by Ram Sutar who had earlier made the statue of Sardar Patel called the” Statue of Unity” that has been installed in Gujarat near the Sardar Sarovar dam.

Rahul Gandhi presents mom Sonia with a pup

Rahul Gandhi introduced his new pet Noorie to social media on the occasion of World Animal Day. It is a gift that he got for his mother Sonia Gandhi from Goa.

Rahul shared a video on YouTube of his recent trip to Goa and how he met the Goan family from whom he got the pup. He surprised his mother Sonia by gifting the pup to her.
Noorie is a Jack Russell Terrier that Rahul bought from Goa based dog breeders Sharvani Pitre and her husband Stanley Braganca. They had got a call from Rahul Gandhi’s office inquiring about the availability of the Jack Russell Terriers.
Rahul took the metro ride and when he reached home, he asked his mother to check out the gift he got for her. Sonia was reluctant at first but on seeing the cute pup, she carried it and said that it was very cute and thanked Rahul for the gift.

India achieves highest medal tally in Asian Games 2023

The Indian contingent has achieved its highest ever medal tally in the ongoing Asian Games 2023. Their previous best was 70 medals in the Asian Games at Jakarta, Indonesia in 2018.

So far they have won 71 medals including 16 gold medals with four and a half more days to go. India is currently in the fourth spot behind China, Japan and South Korea. They won the first gold medal in the compound archery mixed team comprising Jyothi Surekha Vennam and Pravin Ojas Deotale who defeated Chaewon So and Jaehoon Joo of South Korea
So far, India has won 16 gold medals, 26 silver medals and 29 bronze medals with more medals guaranteed in the upcoming events. .They have two assured medals in the squash doubles event, three medals in the individual archery events and two medals in boxing. This will take the medals tally to 78.

Three year old son drowns in a waterpark while his mother was glued to her phone

Jessica Weaver had taken her three year old son Anthony Leo Malave to a Camp Cohen water park in El Paso park in Indiana, United States. She was glued to her phone for hours listening to music and singing along that she failed to see her only child drowning in the water park.

Jessica is facing accusations of negligence and was charged for the tragic death of her three year old toddler. She was apprehended in her hometown of Indiana and was kept in custody at the El Paso County Jail and later released on a surety bond of $100,000.
One of the lifeguards on duty in the park rescued the child from a four-foot deep section of the pool. It has been reported that the child was not even wearing a life vest even though these facilities were available. Moreover, signs indicated that all children under 6 years had to be actively supervised.

Indian billionaire and son killed in plane crash

Indian billionaire Harpal Randhawa is the owner of RioZim, a diversified mining company that produces gold and coal and refines nickel and copper. He and his 22 year old son Amer died in a plane crash when their private plane crashed near a diamond mine in southwestern Zimbabwe after it encountered a technical fault.

Harpal Randhawa is also the founder of the $4 billion private equity business GEM Holdings.
They were traveling in a Cessna 206 aircraft owned by RioZim and were flying from Harare to the Murowa diamond mine when the accident took place. All the 6 crew members and passengers onboard died in the accident.
The family of the mining tycoon is holding a memorial service on the 4th of October in Zimbabwe to celebrate his life and that of  his son Amer. His friends and associates have been invited for the service.
