Bilkis Bano case convicts surrender at a Gujarat jail

The 11 convicts in the 2002 Bilkis Bano gangrape case surrendered before Godhra sub jail in Panchmahal district in Gujarat on Sunday night as the Supreme Court had ordered.


The Supreme Court passed orders on the 8th of January asking the 11 convicts who were released prematurely on August 15th, 2022 to surrender before jail authorities by January 21st. The convicts filed petitions seeking more time to surrender and gave reasons like health issues, impending surgery, marriage in the family etc but the Supreme Court refused to accept any of these reasons and directed the convicts to report back to jail.
All the 11 convicts are guilty of raping Bilkis Bano who was 21 years old and five months pregnant in 2002 during the communal riots that took place in Godhra.

India to host Miss World pageant 2024

India will be hosting the 71st edition of the Miss World pageant after a long gap of 28 years. This was announced by Julia Morley, Chairman of Miss World on X. This event will be televised and streamed worldwide.


The pageant was formerly held in India in 1996 in Bengaluru.
The first Indian woman to win the Miss World crown was Reita Faria in 1966. Later on in 1994, Aishwarya Rai won the crown. Diana Hayden earned the title in 1997, Yukta Mookhey in 1999, Priyanka Chopra in 2000 and finally Manushi Chillar was crowned Miss World in 2017.
Karolina Bielawska of Poland won the crown in 2023 and she will crown the winner of the Miss World 2024 at the end of the event.
The month-long festival will be hosted by the India Tourism Development Corporation at Hotel Ashok in New Delhi in February and the grand finale is scheduled to be held on March 9th at the Jio World Convention Centre in Mumbai.

Princess of Wales undergoes Abdominal surgery

Kate Middleton, the Princess of Wales has undergone an abdominal surgery and will remain in hospital for the next 2 weeks. The surgery on the 42 year old Princess was planned and successful. She will recuperate at her home in Windsor after discharge from the hospital and will not return to public duties till Easter.


Kate underwent surgery at the London Clinic and wishes and hopes that the public will understand her desire to maintain as much normalcy for her children as possible.
Kensington Palace will provide updates on her health only as and when necessary. Princess Kate apologised to all concerned as she had to postpone all her upcoming engagements. Prince William is also likely to postpone public duties to support wife Kate and take care of their 3 children.

Twinkle Khanna gets her Master’s degree from London University

Twinkle Khanna, recently completed her Master’s degree from Goldsmiths, University of London. She shared pictures of the convocation ceremony on Instagram. She can be seen wearing a green saree and a black robe and cap, posing with her husband Akshay Kumar.

Bar Council Chairman writes to CJI to grant holiday to courts on January 22

Chairman of the Bar Council of India Manan Kumar Mishra has written a letter to the Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud requesting him to grant holiday to all courts in the country on January 22 on the occasion of the inauguration of the Ram Mandir.

According to him, the event holds great historical, religious and cultural significance for millions of people across the country.
There is a 7 day agenda of rituals from the 14th of January leading to the Pran Pratishtha ceremony on the 22nd. More than 100 dignitaries from 55 countries across the world have been invited for the event.
Therefore, taking into consideration the religious, cultural, national and international importance of this event, the Chairman of the BCI has requested the CJI to declare a holiday for all courts in the country to enable the members of the legal fraternity to participate or observe the inauguration ceremony in Ayodhya.

Priyanka Chopra’s daughter turns 2

Malti Marie, daughter of Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas turned two on Monday. There was a birthday bash and only family members were present. Malti Marie was dressed in a co-ord set with a bindi. She was seen posing with a garland at the temple. The entire family performed a special puja. Priyanka’s mother Dr. Madhu Chopra joined in the celebrations.

Many fans praised the family for adopting both Indian and American cultures.
There was an Elmo Sesame Street birthday party later on. Pictures of Malti Marie posing with her mother and father and the Jonas brothers have been shared on Instagram.
Priyanka and Nick welcomed daughter Malti Marie in January 2022. They were married in Umaid Bhawan Palace in 2018.

Dhoni’s ex-business partners file defamation case against him

Two former partners of cricketer MS Dhoni have filed a defamation case against him in the Delhi High Court. This comes after Dhoni filed a criminal complaint against the two of them for cheating him of over Rs 15 crore.

The defamation case filed by Mihir Diwakar and his wife Sowmya Das will come up for hearing tomorrow, the 18th of January. They have also filed for a permanent injunction and damages against Dhoni and several social media platforms and business houses to restrain them from publishing and circulating false and malicious statements against them.
Dhoni had filed a case for cheating against the two former partners in a court in Ranchi. He stated that the duo who are directors of a sports management company named Aarka Sports, approached him to establish cricket academies in his name both in India and abroad. As per the agreement, the profits were to be shared 70:30 between him and the partners. However, they did not make any payment to him and began setting up academies without even informing him. He served legal notices on the duo and later filed a case for cheating him to the tune of more than Rs 15 crore.

Vivek Ramaswamy opts out of Presidential race

Indian- American Vivek Ramaswamy dropped out of the 2024 presidential race after he finished fourth in the Republican Iowa caucuses, considered to be an indicator of the road ahead. He later pledged his support to former president Donald Trump.

In a post on X. he stated that he did not achieve the goal and therefore will do everything to make sure that Trump is the next US President.
Throughout his self funded campaign, Vivek Ramaswamy had been one of Trump’s staunchest defenders and even promised to pardon Trump of all charges against him on his first day in office.
He however told his supporters that this is not the end of the road but the beginning of a new one and that they have a country to save and they will do it together.

Former New Zealand PM Jacinda Ardern marries partner Clarke Gayford

Jacinda Ardern, former Prime Minister of New Zealand married her long-term partner Clarke Gayford in a small private ceremony a few days ago. Their marriage was to take place in 2022 but it was cancelled due to the pandemic and the strict restrictions that the government had imposed during that period.

They have been living together for a decade and have a five year old daughter, Neve. The wedding took place in Hawke’s Bay at Craggy Range Winery.
Jacinda Ardern wore a beautiful ivory dress designed by her friend Juliette Hogan and a long veil. She carried a white cascading bouquet in her hand. Her hair was done up in a chignon and she wore shoes from Mount Maunganui designer Chaos and Harmony.
Jacinda served as prime minister for more than 5 years and resigned from office in January 2023 saying that she did not have ”enough in the tank” to carry on as the PM.

New King of Denmark sworn in on Sunday

After Queen Margarethe II of Denmark abdicated from the throne after reigning for 52 years, the prime minister of Denmark proclaimed Frederik X as King on Sunday. Queen Margarethe stunned the entire nation on New Years Eve when she announced her decision to step down from the throne. She has become the first Danish monarch in 900 years to voluntarily step down.

The coronation ceremony where King Frederik was proclaimed King was a simple one that took place at Christiansborg Palace. Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen proclaimed Frederik king from the balcony of the palace before the cheering crowd. She read the proclamation three times as per tradition and Frederik wore a ceremonial military uniform adorned with medals. He was later joined by his wife, the new Queen Mary and their 4 children. Queen Mary wore a white dress.
The eldest son of the couple Christian will become crown prince and heir to the throne.

Artist gets in the Guinness Book of World Records for world’s longest painting

Guo Feng, a woman from China accomplished a rare feat. She sat on the Great Wall of China to create a drawing on a 1,014 metre long canvas- about 3,327 feet. She entered into the Guinness World Records for this feat. This is said to be the longest drawing in the world by an individual.

The video of the woman doing the artwork was shared by Guinness World Records on Instagram. The video shows Guo Feng sitting on the Great Wall drawing on a long white canvas .that was spread on the wall. The video also showed a closeup of her drawing.
She spent 60 days preparing the drawing which was about ‘eternity’ and it tracked the development of civilization through time. The post on Instagram has accumulated many likes and congratulatory messages from people

Bollywood actor Aamir Khan’s daughter Ira Khan got married to fitness trainer Nupur Shikare last week. The wedding took place in an intimate ceremony in Mumbai. On Wednesday, there was another wedding ceremony in Udaipur, Rajasthan where the couple exchanged rings. Aamir Khan became so emotional at this moment that he could not hold back his tears. Vaishali and coach Ramesh receive awards from the President

R.Vaishali who is India’s latest grandmaster has been awarded the prestigious Arjuna award while her trainer GM RB Ramesh has been conferred the Dronacharya award.

Vaishali bagged the award for her good performance in chess over a period of 4 years. She won a cash prize of $19,000, a bronze statuette and a ceremonial dress from President Droupadi Murmu. She was voted Chess.com’s Woman Player of the Year and became India’s 84th grandmaster recently. She is the third woman grandmaster in India. Koneru Humpy became a GM in 2002 and Dronavalli Harika became one in 2011.
Her brother Pragg received the Arjuna award in 2022 while five-time World Champion Viswanathan Anand received the Arjuna award way back in 1985. He tweeted that ” it is a proud moment for the Indian chess community” on X.
