Rohan Bopanna’s victory makes his wife emotional

Indian tennis player Rohan Bopanna scripted history by becoming the oldest major winner at the age of 43. In fact, he was on the verge of giving up on tennis a few years ago. So, it turned out to be an emotional win not only for him but for his family as well.

Just as Bopanna and his partner Matthew Ebden were celebrating their victory in the finals of the Australian Open men’s doubles, the cameraman found Bopanna’s wife Supriya Annaiah in tears. Bopanna later walked up to his box that was occupied by his wife, daughter Tridha, in-laws and coach Scott Daviddoff.
While speaking at the presentation, Bopanna recalled his decision to retire a few years ago because of a winless streak of over five months. He thanked his wife Supriya and daughter Tridha for all their love and support. He stated that it was perseverance which kept him going.

Rohan Bopanna becomes World No 1 in doubles tennis

Indian tennis player Rohan Bopanna, creates history and has become the oldest player to claim the No1 spot in the men’s doubles rankings at the age of 43. He partnered with Australia’s Matthew Ebden to secure this historic win. The duo defeated Maximo Gonsalez and Andres Molteni from Argentina in straight sets 6-4, 7-6 in the quarter-finals of the 2024 Australian Open.

Both Bopanna and Ebden displayed teamwork and resilience during the match and they will face the unseeded duo of Tomas Machac and Zhizhen Zhang in the semi-finals.
This achievement of Bopanna, surpasses the earlier record of Mike Bryan who was 41 years old. Bopanna expressed happiness at his achievement and said that it will inspire a lot of people all over the world who are 40 and above.

Indian boxing legend Mary Kom retires

Mary Kom, a six-time World Champion announced her retirement from boxing due to age restrictions. As per the rules of the International Boxing Association male and female boxers are allowed to fight in elite-level competitions only till the age of 40. Since Mary Kom is now 41 years old, she will have to hang up her boots.

At an event, she admitted that though she still has the spirit to compete, unfortunately due to the age limit, she is unable to compete in any event.
Mary Kom is the first female boxer in history to have won six world titles. She became the first Indian to win a gold medal at the AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships. She won the World Championship titles in 2005, 2006, 2008, 2010 and later clinched the Olympic gold medal in 2012. In between, she took short breaks to give birth to her 3 children.

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman participates in Pre-budget halwa ceremony

It is customary to have an halwa ceremony every year marking the final stage of the preparation process for the interim Union Budget 2024. This traditional ceremony was held at the headquarters of the Union Finance Ministry at North Block in Delhi.

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman was seen unwrapping a huge iron wok and stirring the halwa before distributing it to the officials of the ministry.
This customary halwa ceremony is performed every year before the ”lock-in” process of budget preparation begins. This lock-in process is observed to maintain the secrecy of the budget and to prevent it from leaking before it is presented in the Parliament.
The halwa is served to all the officials who are directly associated with the budget making process. It is based on Indian tradition of eating something sweet before starting something important.
The interim budget will be presented on February 1.

House where Jeff Bezos founded Amazon is up for sale

Jeff Bezos and his ex-wife Mackenzie Scott founded Amazon in a 1,540 square foot home. This home is now put up for sale and offers one lucky buyer to own a piece of internet history. The single story, three bedroom house is located near Seattle.

Bezos and his then- wife began selling books online from the garage in the mid 1990s. The garage only had a computer, some basic office supplies and a desk. Within a few years, it became a choice for online shoppers all over the world. Its current market capitalization is a staggering $1.6 trillion.
The 1,540 square foot house was rebuilt in 2001 and has an asking price of just under $2.3 million. The garage has a recreation of the original ”amazon.com” that Bezos had earlier.

PM Modi inaugurates Ram Mandir in Ayodhya

Prime Minister Narendra Modi led the rituals of the Pran Pratishtha ceremony at the Ram temple in Ayodhya on January 22nd. Thousands of people from all walks of life including many celebrities attended the grand event and lakhs of people watched the live telecast of the event on television.


The Rama Lalla idol was unveiled after the hour long rituals took place. Hymns and verses about Lord Ram were chanted in temples across the country.
The ceremony started at around 12.20pm . PM Modi performed the ‘aarti’ of the Ram Lalla idol and also performed ‘parikrama’ of the deity and did ‘dandvat pranam’. The PM got blessings from the sadhus present there.
After the ceremony, he addressed the gathering . He later unveiled a statue of ‘Jatayu’ and showered flower petals on the workers who constructed the Ram temple.

Babies born on Ram Mandir opening day named Ram and Sita

Many couples in India whose babies were born on the inauguration of Ayodhya’s Ram temple have been named after Lord Ram and Goddess Sita. In fact many couples sought ‘muhurat deliveries’ to coincide with the ‘pran pratishtha’ ceremony in Ayodhya on Monday.


Some people felt that it was an auspicious day and therefore wanted the delivery to be done on the historic day when Lord Ram is back in Ayodhya. A hospital in Karnataka conducted more than 20 deliveries on Monday.
At a hospital in Kanpur, 25 babies were delivered on Monday. Many boys born on Monday were named Ram and girl babies born were named Sita by their parents.
Boy babies were also given other names of Lord Ram like Raghav, Raghavendra, Raghu and Ramendra and girls were named Janaki besides the name of Sita.

Pakistani cricketer Shoaib Malik got married to Pakistani actress Sana Javed on January 20th. This is his third marriage. He was earlier married to Ayesha Siddiqui, then to tennis star Sania Mirza. He shared pictures of the wedding ceremony on social media and it came as a shock to many of his fans.


For Sana Javed, this is the second marriage. She was earlier married to singer Umair Jaswal. She appears in Urdu television and made her debut in 2012. She has acted in many serials. Sana has updated her profile name on Instagram to Sana Shoaib Malik immediately after the marriage.
Shoaib married Sania Mirza on April 12th 2010 and they have a son named Izhaan who was born in 2018.They lived in Dubai and a lot of rumours about their separation have been doing the rounds on social media.
