A Confederacy of Dunces

0

dunces1

If anyone told you to pick up A Confederacy of Dunces, throw everything and obey them. A laugh riot in novel form, the book is a magnum opus for the avid reader with a flair for all things comical. John Kennedy Toole will leave you in splits, despite the lingering feel of a simmering wound under all that laughter. The epicentre of all the comic action is the anti-hero, Ignatius Reilly. He is obnoxious, a hypochondriac, an unassuming philosopher with a proclivity for blunt and blatant lying. Clumsy, sticking out like a sore thumb and absolutely impossible, Reilly makes you want to hold onto the book for posterity.

Set in the eighties, A Confederacy of Dunces is as relevant and realistic in its subtle poignancy and lumbering comic value today. Within a few pages, it becomes apparent that the book truly deserved the Pulitzer it earned – the only difficult-to-digest reality underlying the book being Toole’s suicide. Reilly is typically the kind of person you would love to hate to love, as he stands out as an anomaly, and isn’t the least bit apologetic about it.

The story traces the life and times of Ignatius Reilly. A flatulent, clumsy person indoctrinated in his own inclinations towards Boethius and his philosophy, the tale chronicles his many trials at different work places. Devoid of a sense of work ethic, Reilly cuts to the chase with incomparable tale-spinning, self-spun ideologies and philosophies that guide his initiatives. He starts off at Levy Pants, where he desperately tries to lead a workers’ revolt, only to watch it crumble before him while he stands clueless atop a table looking for support. He then joins a hot dog vendor, winding up eating more than a fair share of the hot dogs himself, while painting ridiculous portraits of purported tales for why the hot dogs went missing. Add to the mix a mother that is terribly concerned about her son and his “communis” inclinations, a hapless and henpecked police officer who is vested with the charge of hunting Reilly down, a felonious jivecat replete with dark-glasses and a quintessential meme-line of his own, a love interest who is often seen questioning Reilly’s sexual obsessions and issues, and a bunch of other ludicrous puppets that offer you gags like nothing before.

What sets the book apart as worthy of a read is not the story line or the classy linear feel to the narrative – but rather, the inventive quality that explodes in a fugue of laughter. There are subtle overtones of loyalist tributes to the likes of Dickens and Swift – but Toole holds his own in a way that makes you cry for the lack of faith he had in his own work. Easily a remarkable read without demanding too much from your side, Confederacy is a bookshelf keepsake.

DSC01742A well known brand in Bengaluru, Plantation House, opened its doors in Hyderabad on Saturday. Shalini Subramanian, an NID graduate has been designing since 1996 but set up her atelier only in 2009.

I ask her about the unusual name for a clothing brand that she has chosen. She says, “Life on a plantation is very close to the earth, very practical. There is a serenity and calm about the pace at which life moves at a plantation. I had this philosophy in mind when I started this label. My clothes are like that – easy to wear, no fuss, can be worn in several different ways and long lasting. The idea of sustainability is what I want to promote, where the garment is so versatile it makes a home in your wardrobe.”

DSC00620

Her tops and tunics are mostly in handloom fabrics like tussar, khadi, cotton, silk, cotton silk etc. The colours she uses are interesting, muted greens, crimsons, blues, beiges and some oranges. Most of them echo the colours of dried flowers and because they are clubbed together according to style, it is easy to select one that works for you.

Shalini has taken classic shapes like the kimono, the African tunic etc and given them a modern twist. The versatility of her garments means a person can wear them any which way they want. A rectangular hemlined short cropped top can be taken over the neck and worn as a jacket.

Cullotte style trousers can be worn low on the hip or high on the waist. Interesting pictures of Shalini’s clients wearing her clothes in different styles adorn the store which has furniture done in the Shaker style of woodwork. Simple lines with wooden pegs on panels that can be moved to any part of the shop, a cement floor and a very minimalistic feel overall echo her theme of sustainability.

Sizes are available for women of all shapes and from a girl of 14 to a woman of 70 can find something they like at her store. Prices range from Rs 2500 to even Rs 25000 for the Pashmina kurtis which were really the most unusual of her fabric choices.

The pieces of handwoven fabric cut into interesting drapes and geometric lines are intriguing and very wearable. So for those of you looking for embellishment and bling free clothing to suit your body’s contours, check out the Plantation House store at Banjara Hills.

The spa uses only natural products and some of them have been specially created keeping client needs in mind. The treatments include the Marma body, mind and spirit massage with aromatic herbal oils that stimulate the marmas – the vital pressure points of the body. The Anti stress, head, neck and shoulder massage; the Padabhyanga foot and leg massage; Soothing Hot Stone, Thai Yoga Massage  and Serena Dhara which is an interpretation of the popular Sirodhara massage in Ayurveda and massages for couples are part of the range on offer. Rehydrating treatments for the body and facials for men and women are also available.

IMG_9643

The ambience is relaxing with soft music playing the background. Soft lighting and the airconditioning not too cold puts you in the mood for a massage right away.

We tried the Serenity full body massage. The attendant asks you to choose between three oils – relaxing, stimulating and sensual – before proceeding with the treatment. The healing oil relaxes the body and the masseuse checks often whether the pressure being applied is enough or more is required. We chose the stimulating oil which had the musky herbal scents of Ayurveda and it was the right choice.

IMG_9646

Spa massages start at Rs 1550 and can go up to Rs 5200 for the massage for couples. Body treatments are priced between Rs 1600-Rs 1700 and facials from Rs 2200-Rs 2600. Taxes are extra.

Creative cooking with the married man

0

priya_0101A journalist and columnist, Samar Halankar has written a book that combines recipes with his memoirs of how he started cooking, getting hold of his grandmother’s recipes through her letters to his mother, the trials and errors and mostly, the success stories from the kitchen. Samar believes in making do with what is available in the kitchen and if living away from home, using local ingredients to avoid excess baggage. He is also a great advocate of men learning to cook. He says, “My mother was working so she involved my brother and me and got us to help around the kitchen. That got me interested and then living away from home meant I had to know how to cook.”
Surprisingly, he is fonder of eating than of cooking. “I love to eat good food so the best way to do that no matter where one is, is by learning to cook.”

The tone of the book is chatty and informal and Samar has been generous with the recipes. Right from his grandmother’s recipes, a treasure trove written on inland letters sent to his mother just after she got married, he shares the results of his experiments with local ingredients. Other than kokum, a souring agent extensively used by people from his community and the coastal regions of west India, he believes in using what is locally available. So you have Couscous with bell pepper, zucchini and a Srinagar garam masala; a Dastakar fish which includes ingredients bought from a Dastakar Mela, and of course, his Goan fish curry, a zapped, ten minute version of his grandmother’s original recipe.

The book is also a funny take on his very non vegetarian dislike for vegetarian food and his reluctant acceptance of a few veggies on his plate being present occasionally. Having a vegetarian wife has of course instilled a healthy respect for them he says in the book. Ask him about a few tips for cooking tasty food and he says, “Dry roasting and then grinding your spices before using them always gives a certain effervescence to the dish. And always use some fresh herbs as they give the recipe a fresh twist.” And the favourite eating spots of this accomplished cook? “Royal China, near VT station in Mumbai and Shri Dutta Boarding House which is also in Mumbai.”

For those of you who are interested in cooking, or looking for some fun reading along with creative ways to cook the same old chicken or fish, this book is just right for you.

WYCI Store Launch

0

Niveditha Srihari and her partner Spandana were designing menswear with an Indo Western touch for almost two years before they decided to open their own store. Tired of explaining their creations and the concept behind the store to everyone, they decided to name it WYCI – Whatever You Call It. Pronounced as Viki, the store has some classy sherwanis and pathanis in linens, silks and fine wool with subtle and intricate designs. The linen pathanis are unique because of the fabric and the pastel shades. They can be teamed up with linen pants or jeans.

Says Niveditha, “We realised that men like to wear Indo western fusion clothing for events like a sangeet or a cocktail party. So we decided to bring in waistcoats with a touch of embroidery, linen sherwanis so they would light to wear and easy on the eye and the pastels were used because like women, men also like to experiment with colour.”

There are also short kurtas to be worn over jeans, in pastel shades with little detailing, bandhgalas with a minimalistic surface embellishment and waistcoats and Nehru jackets. There is in short, a range for every kind of preference.

The colour palette at the store ranges from cream and beige to soft pink and light greens and there are a few in funky colours as well like bright leaf green and emerald green. Prices start at Rs 5000 onwards and from a young person to a 60-year-old with a sense of style, there is something for every guy who likes to dress different. And if you don’t like what is on the racks, you can always opt to have your garment custom made according to your taste.

Being women, the owners couldn’t possibly leave out others of their ilk. They have two racks for bored girlfriends or sisters to check out some trendy evening wear created by different designers not based in Hyderabad. Currently there is a collection by Ashna Kalra on display.

So whatever your tastes, if you are looking for subtle and stylish menswear, check out WYCI.

RESURRECT celebrates womanhood where romanticism and baroque elements are interpreted into the collection of swim wear and evening gowns.

Angels depicted in the cathedral and the white arches in baroque carvings portray shades of white highlighted with floral embroidery and lacework. The pearl palette merges into shades of gold and copper with olive and ochre colors taken from the church frescos. These are depicted with intricate beadwork and sequins ending the collection in the palette of maroons and crimsons.

The entire collection celebrates femininity with a lot of floral depictions in the collection in terms of threadwork, prints, digital printing and lacework. The collection also shares hints of transparency with fabric interplay by lace, tulle, georgettes, organzas and chiffons.

Motherhood Launch

0

The Motherhood Birthing Centre was inaugurated on Saturday the 9th of November by Saina Nehwal and famous Malayalam actor Mammootty. The opening saw a lot of Hyderabad’s media in attendance but to our disappointment, Mammootty was not giving any interviews and Saina cut the ribbon and was present for a very brief while. Dr Mohammed Rehan Sayeed, Mammootty’s son-in-law and his wife Surumy played gracious hosts to the guests present. It is the third centre for Motherhood which offers state of the heart facilities and a very unique birthing experience for the parents. Nurses have been trained for two months to make the mother-to-be comfortable at every stage. Four more centres are expected to be launched over the next year.
