R. Priya is the new mayor of Chennai

Chennai gets its youngest and first dalit woman as mayor. R.Priya, 28 years of age has been selected for the post by the ruling DMK party. Priya will be the third woman to hold the post after Tara Cherian and Kamakshi Jayaraman. The deputy mayor will be M.Mukesh. The post of Mayor was held earlier by Saidai Draisamy from the AIADMK who held the post from 2011 to 2016. After his 5 year term ended in 2016, no polls were held to the local bodies until last month.


Priya is the granddaughter of former DMK MLA Chengai Sivam and the daughter of R.Rajan, the area co-secretary for the DMK. She hails from a political background and has an MCom degree to her credit. She joined the DMK at a young age of 18.
She was elected councillor from ward number 74 in Chennai’s Thiru Vi Ka Nagar in the urban local body polls held on February 19. Thiru Vi Ka Nagar is in the northern region of Chennai and is not well developed. People living in this area live in congested buildings with poor infrastructure. Priya has a lot on her hands and is confident that she can perform well.

Virat Kohli is playing his 100th Test match today

Former captain Virat Kohli has achieved a new milestone in his career. He is playing his 100th Test match today against Sri Lanka in Mohali.
He was felicitated by the BCCI and he received a special cap from India coach Rahul Dravid. Virat’s wife Anushka was by his side to cheer for him for achieving this milestone.


It was a special moment for Kohli to receive the 100th Test cap from Rahul Dravid who was his childhood hero. What made the moment even more special was the presence of his wife Anushka and his brother. Virat is proud of the fact that he completed 100 games in the purest format of cricket.
Virat made his debut against the West Indies in 2011 and scored just 4 runs and 15 runs at Sabina Park. He has come a long way from there and has amassed 7962 runs with an average of 50.39 runs in his 11 year journey in cricket. He will join the illustrious list of Gavaskar, Vengsarkar, Kapil Dev, Tendulkar, Kumble, Dravid, Ganguly, Sehwag, Harbhajan Singh and Isanth Sharma who played 100 tests.

Saudi crown Prince offers to mediate in Russia-Ukraine war

Saudi crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has offered to host mediation talks between Russia and Ukraine. He called Russian President Vladimir Putin as the conflict has gone into the second week.


He called for a political solution and reiterated his support for the OPEC+ group of all producers which includes Russia to stabilise the oil markets. Even though the Gulf countries have refrained from criticising the Russian invasion of Ukraine, they voted for a UN General Assembly resolution that demanded an immediate withdrawal of Russia from Ukraine.
Saudi Arabia and Russia are both members of OPEC+ and have opted to keep production steady in spite of the soaring cost of oil. It may be noted that Saudi Arabia is the world’s biggest oil exporter.

International Criminal Court to begin probe into possible war crimes in Ukraine

The Chief Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court at Hague disclosed that a probe will begin into possible war crimes in Ukraine after his office receives the backing of 39 countries. These countries include Australia, Britain, Canada, New Zealand, Switzerland and many Latin American countries.


Karim Khan, the Chief Prosecutor stated that the work of collecting evidence has begun and that he believes that crimes have been committed within the jurisdiction of the court. Though Ukraine is not a member, in 2014, it accepted the jurisdiction of the court.
Khan was recently appointed to the post of prosecutor and he said that the probe will be conducted objectively and independently The ICC based in Hague was established in 2002 as an independant court to try individuals accused of war crimes, genocide as well as crimes against humanity.

Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas yet to name their baby

Ajith’s recent film Valimai is doing very well at the box office and this prompted former CM J Jayalalitha’s assistant to make a remark that he feels that Ajith is getting ready to enter politics. This statement garnered a lot of attention both among the fans of the actor and in political circles. To clear the air, Ajith’s publicist Suresh Chandra took to Twitter and put the rumours at rest by saying that the actor does not have any intentions to enter into politics and he also requested the media to refrain from encouraging misleading information.

The world isolates Putin for attacking Ukraine

US President Joe Biden said that the world has ”isolated” Putin for attacking Ukraine. He warned that devastating economic penalties would sap Russia’s economic strength and weaken its military too.


While addressing members of the Congress in his first State of the Union address, Biden said that Putin had no idea of what he is in for. He also mentioned that the Russian oligarchs and corrupt leaders had amassed billions of ill gotten wealth during Putin’s regime. He warned that their ill-begotten gains including their yachts, luxury apartments and private jets were going to be targeted
Biden also announced a ban on Russian aircraft from US airspace. The US joins Canada and the European Union in closing off its airspace to Russian aircraft.

Study predicts that fourth wave of Covid-19 to begin in India in June

A study by researchers in the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur predicts that the fourth wave of Covid-19 may set in around June in the country and would last for about 4 months. The severity however will depend on the vaccination status and administration of booster doses.


The research was led by Sabara Parshad Rajeshbhai, Subhra Sankar Dhar and Shalabh of the Mathematics department of IIT Kanpur. They used a mixture of Gaussian distribution based on the data on Zimbabwe.
The research predicts that the fourth wave will start from June 22, 2022, peak on August 23, 2022 and end on October 24, 2022. There is also a chance that a new variant of coronavirus may emerge and have an impact on the analysis.
There is also no guarantee that the new variant will be less severe than the previously identified ones.

India to provide humanitarian assistance and medicines to Ukraine

The Ministry of External Affairs has stated in a press briefing that India will send humanitarian assistance and medicines to Ukraine amidst the Russia-Ukraine crisis.


Arindam Bagchi, Spokesperson for the MEA said that steps are being taken to evacuate stranded Indian nationals in Ukraine by arranging for new flights. He requested people not to panic and emphasized that India is augmenting the presence of the MEA teams at border points in the neighbouring countries of Ukraine viz Slovakia, Romania, Poland, Hungary and Moldova. Indian nationals in the Ukraine have been instructed to try to go to the western part of Ukraine and contact teams and control rooms. The control rooms have been expanded and channels like WhatsApp and Twitter are functional.
The government of India is taking care of all expenses regarding the airfare. The Indian Air Force is ready and will be used if necessary. As of now only commercial aircrafts are used.

Thousands of Indians flown out of Ukraine under Operation Ganga

The government of India has launched ‘Operation Ganga’, a multi-prong evacuation plan to evacuate Indians stranded in Ukraine. According to Foreign Secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla, thousands of Indian citizens have already been flown out of Ukraine. They have been evacuated from Ukraine through the land routes. Moreover, thousands of Indian students have crossed over from Ukraine into zones conducive for their evacuation by air route to India.


It is stated that the Indian government is bearing the cost of evacuation due to the emergency situation pending in Ukraine. It has also issued a number of advisories requesting Indian citizens to leave Ukraine. So far, 4,000 Indians left even before the conflict and around 15,000 of Indian citizens were in Ukraine when Operation Ganga commenced.
As air space in Ukraine was closed after the attack, land evacuation options through four neighbouring countries- Hungary, Poland, Romania and Slovakia have been identified. Specific border crossing points were identified and the Ministry of External Affairs had deployed teams with Russian speaking officers to assist in the evacuation process. A 24×7 control room has been set up in the Indian Embassy in Kylv.

Russian billionaires bear the brunt of Putin’s attack on Ukraine

Russian billionaires have lost billions of dollars as the country’s stock market as well as the ruble plunged after Vladimir Putin invaded Ukraine.
Putin summoned the top business leaders of the country for a meeting at the Kremlin. 13 billionaires were present and over 116 billionaires have lost more than $126 billion since Russia attacked Ukraine. At the meeting, Putin is said to have told the business leaders that what is taking place currently is a necessary measure. However, none of the leaders commented on it.


A report states that at least five billionaires- Alekperov, Mikhelson, Mordashov, Potanin and Kerimov were the biggest losers who lost $1 billion or more.
Following the attack on Ukraine by Russia, the British government announced an asset freeze of Russian banks and also a ban on Russian nationals from holding more than 50,000 pounds in a UK bank account.
