The Magnus vs The World match has broken the record for the largest online chess match ever. Earlier, Grandmasters Garry Kasparov and Viswanathan Anand have also taken part in similar matches.
In 1999, Kasparov vs The World had the Russian chess legend compete against 50,000 players. while Anand, a 5 time world champion competed against 70,000 players. Both of them won their matches.
While Kasparov and Anand competed in traditional Classical matches, Carlsen is playing against the world in a Freestyle Chess match. In Freestyle Chess, the positions of the pieces on a chess board are randomised. Carlsen is playing with white pieces and the world team is playing with black pieces.
