Two judges of the Madras High Court, Justice M S Ramesh and Justice N Senthil Kumar, made a surprise visit to the Puzhal Central Prison on Wednesday in order to ascertain the living conditions of the prisoners.
They spent three hours going around the sprawling campus. They got to inspect the quarantine block, the high security block as well as the women’s prison. The judges also inspected the jail registers to check if everything was in order.
They interacted with the inmates and heard all their concerns and grievances. Later, they visited the kitchen to check the quality of food that was served to the inmates. They even tasted the meals to check if the prescribed hygiene and nutritional standards were being followed.
While visiting the women’s prison, they had discussions on the safety, hygiene and the facilities provided to them.The judges were accompanied by senior prison officials and this initiative was widely appreciated.
