Indian Grandmaster Koneru Humpy won the FIDE Women’s Grand Prix 2024-25 (Pune leg). She had superior tie-breaks over Zhu Jiner from China after both players were tied for the top spot.
Earlier in December last year, Koneru Humpy regained the Women’s World Rapid Chess Championship after a gap of five years at New York. She defeated Bulgarian player Nurgyul Salimova in the ninth and final round and she ended up with seven points.
Humpy was happy to achieve good results in Classical Chess. Wildcard entrant, the 19 year old Indian Divya Deshmukh won four games, drew three and lost two to Humpy and Zhu.
Points will be awarded based on the placings the players secure. Two players with the highest cumulative points will get direct entry to the Women’s Candidates. The Candidates event is between eight players and the winner will get to challenge the world champion for the title.
