The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) recovered a total of 17.3 crore worth of gold and cash in a smuggling case involving Kannada actress Ranya Rao. She was intercepted at the Kempegowda International Airport on Monday night and was found to have 14.2 kg gold bars strapped to her body.
A raid was later conducted at her apartment on Lavelle Road and Rs 2.1 crore worth of designer gold ornaments and Rs 2.7 crore of cash was discovered.
Ranya is the daughter of Karnataka DGP (Police Housing Corporation) K Ramachandra Rao. She was arrested and produced before a magistrate on Tuesday. She has been remanded to a 14 day judicial custody.
According to officials, Ranya was under surveillance as she frequently travelled to the Gulf and made more than 10 trips this year alone. This case is creating political ripples and the police are conducting a detailed investigation into the smuggling operation.
