Elon Musk’s Starlink has received a letter from the Department of Telecommunications to launch its satellite internet services in India. This approval was issued after the satellite internet constellation operated by Starlink Services LLC agreed to meet the security guidelines of the government of India.
Starlink’s application was kept pending for sometime as it was under review. The final nod was issued after the company committed to the revised security norms rolled out this week.
Starlink uses a network of low Earth orbit satellites, currently numbering around 7,000 to deliver high-speed internet even in hard-to-reach locations. Its LEO constellation is expected to expand significantly and even surpass 40,000 satellites.
The Indian government has specified stringent security rules for satellite internet providers who should ensure that data remains within Indian borders and barring linking user connections to any overseas terminals or faculties.
