Former world chess champion Boris Spassky passed away on Thursday in Moscow at the age of 88. He lost his title to American Bobby Fischer in a legendary 1972 match. This contest was later described as the ”Match of the Century”.
The International Chess Federation stated that Spassky was one of the greatest players of all time who left an indelible mark on the game.
Boris Spassky became a grandmaster at the age of 18 and won the World Chess Championship title in 1968 and became the 10th World Chess Champion. He held the title till 1972.
He emigrated to France in 1976 and took French nationality in 1978
He was born in Leningrad in 1937 and was sent to an orphanage in Siberia during the Nazi German siege of the city during World War II.Spassky had been the oldest living world chess champion.
