Politicians, NGOs, activists and students condemn Disha Ravi’s arrest
Earlier this week, 22 year old climate activist and founder of Fridays for Future Disha Ravi was arrested and charged with sedition. She was allegedly involved in editing and sharing an online ‘toolkit’ that was tweeted by Swedish environmental activist Greta Thunberg. The toolkit mainly contained instructions and ways to support the farmers’ protests against the Central Government’s farm laws.
The police arrested her from her residence in Bengaluru based on allegations that she was responsible for instigating violence in Delhi on January 26th 2021 and that she is associated with Khalistan groups working against the country. She was brought before the court without her lawyers and it has been reported that the Delhi commission for women have sent notice to the Delhi police seeking a report as to why that was done. Nikhita Jacob and Shantanu are other activists against whom non bailable warrants have been issued.
There is widespread protests against the way Disha Ravi was arrested by the Delhi police and brought before court without lawyers terming it ‘attrocious’. More than 15 youth organisations have come out in support of Disha apart from politicians like Arvind Kejriwal, Shashi Tharoor and P Chidambaram who have tweeted their support.
