Nine judges take oath in the Supreme Court

Nine new judges including 3 women were administered oath of office as judges of the Supreme Court. In the first time in history, nine judges were sworn in at one go. The judges were administered the oath of office by Chief Justice of India N V Ramana. The ceremony was held in the auditorium of the Supreme Court’s additional building complex. Usually, the swearing in takes place in the CJI’s courtroom but it was shifted to the auditorium in keeping with the Covid-19 guidelines.


The strength of the Supreme Court now has gone up to 33 against the sanctioned strength of 34.


The nine new judges are Justice Abhay Shreeniwas Oka, Justice Vikram Nath, Justice Jitendra Kumar Maheswari, Justice Hima Kohli, Justice BV Nagarathna, Justice CT Ravikumar, Justice M MSundresh, Justice Bala M Trivedi and Justice PS Narasimha.
Out of these 9 judges, three of them, Justice Vikram Nath, Justice Nagarathna and Justice Narasimha are in line to become the CJI.
