Google honours Czech chemist who invented soft contact lens

Google is celebrating the life and legacy of Otto Wichterle, a Czech chemist who invented the soft contact lens. Today is the 108 th birthday of Wichterle who was born on this day in 1913 in Prostejov, the Czech Republic.


Wichterle loved science from his youth and earned a doctorate in organic chemistry in 1936 from the Prague Institute of Chemical Technology. He is most known for the invention of contact lenses and his innovations laid the foundation for the state-of-the-art medical technologies. It is used to restore human connective tissues and bio-recognizable polymers that is said to have inspired a new standard for drug administration.
