Gita Gopinath is all set to succeed Geoffrey Okamoto as the first deputy managing director of IMF. The chief of IMF, Kristaline Georgieva said that Gita is ”the right person at the right time” to take over this role. This is the first time that two women have held the top leadership roles in the IMF.

Gita is recognised as one of the world’s leading macroeconomists. She was appointed as Chief Economist in October 2018. She was due to return to her position at Harvard University in January, 2022 but will now leave the University.
Gita was born in India and is a US citizen. She leads the team that produces the closely watched quarterly World Economic Outlook and became more visible during the Covid-19 pandemic.
According to Georgieva,” Gita displayed intellectual leadership in helping the global economy and the Fund to navigate the twists and turns of the worst economic crisis of our lives.”
