Elisabeth Borne has been appointed as the new Prime Minister of France. She is the second woman in the country to hold the post. The 61 year old Elisabeth will succeed Jean Castex who resigned from the post when President Emmanuel Macron was reelected last month.

Elisabeth is the second woman in the country to hold the post of Prime Minister after Edith Cresson who was PM in 1991-92 under Socialist President Francois Mitterrand. Elisabeth served as Labour Minister in the previous government from 2020 and earlier held the post of Transport Minister and Minister of Ecological Transition.
President Macron is expected to appoint the full government shortly.
