Saint Lukes church is one of the oldest churches in Kashmir and is about 125 years old. The church was closed in the 1990’s after the eruption of militancy in the valley.
The church bells started ringing and devotees gathered for mass prayer yesterday. It is located on the foothills of the Shankaracharya hillock in Dalgate area of the city.

Renovation of the church was undertaken by the J-K Tourism Department under the ‘Smart City Project”. After it was restored to its former glory, it was thrown open after a long period of 30 years. The renovated church will be e-inaugurated by J-K Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha. The entire Christian community is happy about this development and that too in the Christmas week.
There is a miniscule Christian population in the valley and they usually visit the Holy Family church at M.A.Road and the church at Church Lane for Sunday mass
