Women co-operatives to promote cloth bags

Women Tailoring Cooperative Societies currently functioning under the Social Welfare Department are doing their bit to promote cloth bags and do away with the use of plastic.

There are 94 societies across the State. Chennai has 14 units at Adayar.At present, the women are engaged in stitching school uniforms for children. Now they have been assigned the job to stitch cloth bags. A two kg bag will cost Rs 10 and a10 kg bag Rs 20. For stitching each bag, the women will get around 5 rupees. The Social Welfare Department has requested the other departments viz the agriculture department, forest department,  town panchayat, rural development to purchase these bags. They are also making attempts to get orders from the private sector.
