A woman in Indonesia was sentenced to an 18 month jail term for complaining about the volume of a mosque’s prayer. This was termed as conviction under the controversial blasphemy law. Meiliana an ethnic Chinese Buddhist was found to be guilty of insulting Islam for asking the mosque in her neighbourhood to lower its sound system as it hurt her ears.
There are about 8 lakh mosques in the country and the five times a day call for prayer will be heard both in the biggest cities and the smallest towns. The woman’s lawyer said that she would appeal against the decision.
