The first water train from Jolarpet in Vellore district will arrive in Chennai tomorrow. About 11 million litres of water will be ferried by the trains  every day from Jolarpet to Chennai. The infrastructure to transport water is being given final touches to ensure smooth operation of the 50 wagon trains.

A narrow road in South Jaganathan Nagar leads to the railway track near the Villivakkam railway station. Currently the track is used by the Integral Coach Factory to move rail coaches between it’s shell and furnishing divisions. Workers are busy working on the pipelines which has been laid for a distance of nearly 700 metres to match the length of the train. Water will reach the Kilpauk water works and then get distributed to the different parts of the city. The cost of the transportation would be Rs 8.67 lakh per trip. Four trips will be made daily. Two trains with 50 wagons each have been commissioned for carrying the water.
