On 7 July 2007, Reyhaneh Jabbari, a 19-year old Iranian girl, was put behind bars for defending herself against the man who tried to rape her. The man died and she was convicted for premeditated murder. She was hanged in October 2014 after a seven-year trial in which she was put through brutal torture. During the last year of her life in prison, Reyhaneh wrote intimate and detailed accounts of her experiences and the unjust trial and verdict.
Reyhaneh’s story, though an individual experience, has a universal resonance. Her story highlights the disregard for basic human rights in the prison systems across the world, crimes against women in male-dominated societies, as well as the powerlessness of the individual versus the state. This is a story that transcends cultures.
