Ramadan, the ninth month in the Muslim lunar calendar, is celebrated all across the world by fasting from dawn until dusk. This includes abstaining from drinking, eating, immoral acts and anger. Other acts of worship such as prayer, reading the Quran and charity are what complete the holy month. Muslims look forward to opening their fast on the 30th day, with the festival Eid-ul-Fitr, which they celebrate with great pomp and showWe went into the homes of some well-known Muslim families in the city, to get an insight on how they spend this auspicious month and, anticipate and prepare for Eid.

That it is the time for self-improvement, and a time to get closer to God. It is a festive time to meet family and friends during or post iftar, and of course Eid!

Oh my! It starts with the dates and fruit chaat, then bhajias and samosas along with Dal and dhai wade. A fresh fruit juice is a must, especially in this heat!

How do you celebrate Eid-ul-Fitr?

In the morning the men of the house go to the mosque for namaz while the women prepare sheer khorma and breakfast. Then the children of the house go and meet our relatives and friends all dressed up in our best outfits! Dinner is at home as the whole family gets together, laughs, eats and celebrates Eid together.
