The deadly selfie craze

The craze for taking selfies has caused the maximum number of deaths even five times more than shark attacks. A global study found that the most number of deaths while taking selfies was in India. The death toll is creeping up every year as smartphones have become even more common and sophisticated.

India which has a population of about 1.3 billion recorded 159 deaths due to selfies so far. Between October 2011 and November 2017, at least 259 people died while taking selfies across the globe. During the same period, just 50 people were killed by sharks. Women and young men make up three quarters of the selfie deaths. Russia comes second with 16 deaths with most people taking selfies falling from bridges and high rise buildings. The United States comes third with 14 deaths followed by Pakistan.
