Tamilian woman chosen for award in US

A Tamilian woman Rajalakshmi Nandakumar doing research in the US was chosen for the prestigious award for her research on the use of smartphones to detect life threatening health issues. Rajalakshmi who studies at the University of Washington, used a technology that turned a smartphone into an active sonar system that is capable of detecting movement and respiration without any physical contact with the device.

She got inspired by bats that use sonar technique to navigate in the dark by sending out acoustic signals She has been selected for the 2018 Marconi Society Paul Baran Young Scholar award. Rajalakshmi did her bachelor’s degree in Computer Science and Engineering in Chennai and worked for Microsoft research before proceeding to the University of Washington.
