Srivilliputhur palkova made out of cow’s milk and sugar will be getting the Geographical Indication tag from the Geographical Indications Registry in Chennai. The GI application was filed by the Srivilliputhur Milk Producers Co-operative Society.
The sweet is manufactured in and around the municipality of Srivilliputhur in Virudhunagar district. A number of small and large scale private dairy organisations and individual entrepreneurs also produce the sweet which has a great demand. Several food startups in the State have started selling it online under the native sweets category. The uniqueness about this palkova is that it is made only from milk of cows reared in and around Srivilliputhur. The milk is naturally sweet and a small amount of sugar is added to prepare palkova. The average shelf life of the product is about 7 to 10 days. About 2000 kgs of palkova is produced everyday and draws consumers from across the globe.
