The Supreme Court dismissed a Writ Petition at  the admission stage itself filed by 2 activists seeking a direction to the Election Commission to debar Congress President Rahul Gandhi from contesting the Lok Sabha polls from Amethi and Wayanad constituencies till his citizenship issue is decided. The bench comprising of Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi and Justices Deepak Gupta and Sanjiv Khanna found no substance in the petition and hence dismissed the same.

The activists alleged that Rahul had acquired British citizenship as evident from documents filed before the Registrar of Companies in England and Wales. However the court refused to  accept these contentions and held that Public Interest litigations were not meant to target an individual or organisation but it is a medium to resolve human suffering through good governance.
