An 18 year old Saudi woman who fled from her family and hid in a hotel inside Bangkok airport left the airport after a round of talks with the United Nations refugee agency. Rahaf Mohammed Al Quimun escaped from her family and said that she would be killed if forced to return home.

This case has drawn attention to Saudi Arabia’s strict rules requiring women to get permission from her male guardian in order to travel. The immigration officials said that they would provide her with safe shelter under the care of the UNCHR. They would process her request for refugee status and would not expel her to any country where she might be in danger while her case was being processed. She complained that her family was subjecting her to physical, emotional and verbal abuse and that she was imprisoned indoors for months.
