Gomathi Marimuthu who created a sensation for her gold winning performance at the Asian Athletics Championship has been handed over a provisional suspension for doping violation. This 30 year old woman from Tiruchirapalli emerged as a winner in 800 metres event. She has been tested positive for a steroid during the Doha event. If proven guilty, she could be stripped off her gold medal besides facing a 4 year ban. Gomathi however pleaded innocence and denied any wrongdoing on her part.
As stories of her perseverance and tragedies went viral on social media, help poured in from different quarters with political parties, film personalities, and educational institutions vying with each other to provide financial assistance to Gomathi. India now could lose one of the three gold’s it won at Doha and suffer embarrassment in the bargain.
