A study has found that poor nutritional health of women is the main cause of stunted growth in children. Tamil Nadu alone has a stunted growth rate of 20 to 30 per cent and some districts had up to 40 per cent as per the National Family Health Survey making it a challenging public health concern.

Stunting is usually measured for children below the age of 5.Various factors such as women’s body mass index, education, age at marriage and antenatal care can lead to poor nutrition in women. This in turn contributes to stunted growth in children. Currently around 5 crore children are suffering from it
