The Indian Council for Child Welfare in collaboration with UNICEF Chennai and the Department of Social Welfare has come out with evidence that 75 percent of the  1,156 child marriages that were stopped by the government in 2017 were arranged by the parents and out of that figure, 52 percent of the parents did not even get the consent of the child.

It was found that the average age of the bride was 16.4 years. The reasons behind the child marriages were economic problems that constituted 33 percent, followed by scare that the girl would have a love affair, safety issues and sickness of family members. Education plays a major role in addressing these issues. There is a ChildLine 1098 to report cases of child marriages and for requisite action.
