Trishna Shakya a three year old girl was named as the new Kumari of Nepal’s capital Kathmandu after her predecessor retired on attaining puberty. Nepal has a tradition where young girls are worshipped as living gods. Trishna will be anointed at a ceremony where she will be taken from her family home to a palace in Kathmandu’s Durbar Square and she will be taken care of by specially appointed caretakers.

She was selected from among four candidates and would take her throne after performance of prayers and tantric rituals. Once she is anointed she will be allowed to leave her new home 13 times a year and that too only on special feast days. She would be paraded through the streets of Kathmandu wearing a ceremonial dress and elaborate makeup.
