Nalini serving life sentence in Vellore prison for her involvement in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case filed a petition to be let on parole for a period of 6 months to make arrangements for the marriage of her daughter. The State Government opposed the petition stating that she may escape from lawful custody.
Nalini filed a rejoinder stating that the State government decided to release her from prison in 2014 itself, but this decision was stayed by the Supreme Court. She also pleaded that her presence is necessary for making arrangements for the marriage of her daughter and that her mother-in -law had come down from Sri Lanka for this purpose. She further stated that she was a citizen of this country and she was suffering long imprisonment despite being eligible to be released more than a decade ago.
