A 17 year old girl from Nagapattinam died of burns after she was allegedly set on fire by her mother. The girl’s mother then attempted to commit suicide by dousing herself with kerosene. It is suspected to be a case of honour killing. Police sources said that the woman set her daughter on fire as she was enraged by her behavior. Her daughter had a relationship with a boy belonging to a lower caste. She had earlier eloped with that boy but was brought back by her parents.
Both the girl and her mother were admitted in the Nagapattinam government hospital. While the girl died, the condition of the mother is critical. The girl gave a dying declaration before her death wherein she stated that there was a heated exchange between her and her mother due to her relationship with the boy from a scheduled caste. A case of murder had been registered under section 302 of the Indian Penal Code.
