Mistaken identity

In a sad case of mistaken identity, a 55 year old woman was beaten to death by a group of villagers in Athimoor village of Polur Taluk in Tiruvannamalai after they mistook her for a kidnapper. She died on the spot. The deceased Rukmani had gone with her relatives to worship their family deity at Sri Mariyamman temple near Athimoor village, located at the foothills of Javadhu hill by car.

While returning, the driver lost his way and so he stopped to ask for directions from a local named Siva.During this time, Rukmani saw a small girl playing nearby and offered her chocolates. Noticing this, Siva suspected them to be kidnappers and raised an alarm. The group attempted to flee but were overpowered and beaten up. Rukmani succumbed to the injuries on the spot. The driver and three others who were injured were referred to the Government Vellore Medical college hospital. The police registered a case and special teams have been formed to nab the accused.
