After protests from the non Hindi speaking States particularly Tamilnadu, Karnataka and West Bengal, the Central Government has recommended that the  draft of the National Education Policy is modified and  makes it flexible for students to choose their third language in addition to to their mother tongue and English.

Almost all the political parties and Tamil nationalist outfits strongly opposed the three language formula and said that it was tantamount to thrusting Hindi on the non Hindi speaking States. Opposition leader M K Stalin of the DMK warned of disastrous consequences if the Centre still persisted with its Hindi imposition.  Taking note of all the protests, the government finally modified the draft of the New Education Policy.
