Tamilnadu recorded 600 new cases of Covid 19 out of which 399 are from Chennai. According to the health department, Koyambedu wholesale market has contributed 1589 cases out of the total 6009 cases in Tamilnadu so far. Three people in Tamilnadu died taking the death toll in the state to 40. The total number of positive cases in Chennai is 2644.

After it was detected that the Koyambedu wholesale vegetable market was the hotspot for hundreds of cases, the CMDA, ( Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority) temporarily shut down the market. The flower and fruit market was  shifted to  the Madhavaram bus stand a week ago to reduce congestion. It was observed that the complete lockdown that was imposed by the Tamilnadu Government from the 26 of April led to increased crowds in the market as they wanted to stock up on goods without bothering about social distancing.
