There were at least a million people who thronged to get a glimpse of former Chief Minister Karunanidhi at his funeral. The milling crowd was so huge that it took 2 hours to cover the stretch of 2 kms from the Rajaji Hall to the Marina.

His body was draped in the national tricolour with his trademark black glasses, white shirt, white dhoti and yellow shawl. The journey from Rajaji Hall to the Marina was marked with emotional scenes and thousands of supporters lined up along the route to catch a final glimpse of their thalaivar. The High Court entertained the DMK’s plea for a resting place for the departed leader on the Marina and granted a favourable judgement. His casket bore the epitaph “He who toiled tirelessly, rests here now.’.
