Justice Ranjan Gogoi to be new CJI

Justice Ranjan Gogoi has been appointed by the President to be the 46th Chief Justice of India. He will be the first person from Assam to occupy the post.

He will take charge from October 3rd after Justice Dipak Mishra retires. He will have a tenure of a little over a year till he retires in November 2019. Justice Gogoi was born to Keshab Chandra Gogoi, a former Assamese Chief Minister during the Congress regime. He was born on 18th November 1954. He joined the Bar in 1978 and practised in the Gauhati High Court  He was appointed as a permanent judge in February 2001. He was transferred to the Punjab and Haryana High Court in 2010 and became it’s Chief Justice in 2011. He was elevated to the Supreme Court in April 2012.
