Consumer giant Johnson and Johnson has announced that it would stop selling talc based baby powder in  the United States and Canada. The Company faces about 16,000 lawsuits from consumers who claim that it’s products including baby powder causes cancer. The cases are pending before a U.S. District Judge in New Jersey. It has been alleged that the talc products are contaminated with asbestos which is a known carcinogen.
However, the Company refutes these allegations and reiterate that their products are safe. A test conducted by the US Food and Drug Administration have observed trace amounts of asbestos and this has prompted the company to recall one lot of baby powder in October last year. The demand for their products has been diminishing since then. They  however plan to sell their talc based products to other markets in the world.
