Indian origin woman appointed New York Supreme Court Judge

Ushir Pandit Durant who grew up in Ahmedabad was appointed as a Supreme Court judge in the state of New York. She migrated to the US with her family in the 1970’s at the age of 11. She will turn 57 next year.

She attended Saint John’s University for 4 years to do a bachelor’s degree and she spent three years at the New York Law School She joined the Queens district attorney’s office as an assistant district attorney and she wished to dedicate her professional life to public service. Later she was elected as a Civil Court judge and presided over Criminal Court cases pending in Manhattan. Her induction ceremony was the first of a kind as she took her oath on the Bhagavad Gita.
