The Madras High Court has issued directions to Southern Railway to install CCTV cameras in railway coaches to provide adequate safety and security to women passengers, girls, and old age passengers. Justice S.M. Subramaniam who passed the order said that it should be implemented as soon as possible in the interest of the public at large.

The order was passed while dealing with the case of a police constable on duty who was in an inebriated condition and misbehaved with a girl on a running train. The judge said that women are performing tasks on par with men and therefore have to travel alone in buses, trains and aircrafts. Therefore adequate protection should be given to all women passengers and especially to those travelling alone by both the police officers as well as the Railways.
