The 181 helpline for women received more than 14000 calls last month according to V. Amuthavalli, Director of Social Welfare. This special helpline was launched in December last year to assist women who face physical, mental, sexual, emotional or financial abuse and to provide them with help they require. At least 20 suicide attempts were prevented according to the available data.
A quick response team has also been set up in all districts where women can avail immediate rescue. A network of doctors, lawyers and police officers is available and the distressed women can avail of their services.
