In order to encourage the reading habit in children, government schools will be allocating two periods a week for students to read in libraries. Work of setting up libraries equipped with a minimum of 500 books in schools began in June. These reading periods will be made compulsory.
A librarian will be appointed in every school to guide students how to use the library. These teachers will not only maintain the library but also ensure that adequate and appropriate books are available for the students studying from the elementary level to the higher secondary grade. The schools will have to celebrate  National Literacy Week from November 14 to 20 every year to create awareness among the students about the benefits of reading. Students would be encouraged to share details about the books they read. Each school will have to submit a monthly report to the District Education Officer about the maintenance of the library.
